Using tube to check boat speed during catch

This caught my eye: – a tube is attached to the shell such that it creates a small water fountain from pressure as the shell is moving. This is used to observe the shell’s speed during the catch and the goal is to minimise any slow down.

Is this a useful coaching tool and for what boat types? (I tried in on my single and found it quite mesmerising to the point that I crashed into the bank).
