Rowing or Gym

(UK based) Just recently recovered from – back injury I have had since aug/sept and I have lost weight and lots of ability. Don’t want to return to go back to Erging full time and it’s coming up to final year before uni; not sure if I should take a break completely and hit the gym to build some muscle? Any experiences with returning after injury.
